PFEIFFER TRUMPET CONSORT

For over three hundred years the music of George Frideric Handel has captivated a broad audience. Today it is more popular than ever, and one finds it nearly everywhere: in opera houses, churches and concerts, and even in television broadcasts of the UEFA Champions League. Already during his lifetime, Handel was celebrated throughout Europe, in Hamburg just as in Italy – there he was called “the dear Saxon” (il caro Sassone) – and of course in England, his main place of activity.
The Pfeiffer Trumpet Consort has occupied itself with Handel’s music since it was founded. It is therefore a great pleasure to present, on the 250th anniversary of Handel’s death, a recording devoted exclusively to the works of the most important composer, alongside Bach, of the Baroque era. In numerous works the trumpets mark triumphal highlights. Reason enough for the ensemble to make its own arrangements in the greatest possible variety. Offered here is a small glance into Handel’s extensive oeuvre, including, besides the main work – the Music for the Royal Fireworks – excerpts from the oratorio Saul, the world-famous aria “Lascia ch’io pianga,” and the “Collection of Original Marches,” an undoubtedly unique compilation of small jewels from Handel’s operas, oratorios, and instrumental works.
The Pfeiffer Trumpet Consort was founded, initially with four trumpets, by the brothers Joachim, Harald, and Martin Pfeiffer together with Peter Schumann at the Heiliggeistkirche in Heidelberg. They were soon joined by Mathias Müller. In their own arrangements, it is the Pfeiffer Trumpet Consort’s special desire to combine the possibilities of today’s instrumentarium with Baroque performance practice. With great enthusiasm, the ensemble is again and again able to reach a broad concert audience. On Cantate the Consort relaesed so far not less than four successful recordings.
